Boise State finishes 9th at the NCAA D1 Wrestling Championships
After winning the Pac-10 Wrestling tournament in Corvallis, OR, the Broncos went back to work to prepare for the final tournament of the year, the NCAA D1 Championships in Philadelphia, PA. Qualifying 10 wrestlers into the NCAA tournament made Boise State one of only two teams to send a full squad to nationals. Three out of the ten wrestlers to compete for Boise State ended the tournament with All-American Honors.
At 133 lbs. Andrew Hochstrasser made the finals after an action packed semi-finals match with Andrew Long of Penn State. In the finals Hochstrasser faced Jordan Oliver for the third time this season. Oliver wrestled to a quick lead on Hochstrasser in the early stages of the first round. Oliver seemed to be afraid of the Bronco’s mat wrestling skills during all three periods and was forced to choose neutral in the second round. During the final round of the match Hochstrasser earned his escape point and then aggressively pursued Oliver across the mat as the Oklahoma State Wrestler stalled the clock out giving up a stalling warning toward the end of the period. The final score was (8-4) in favor of Oliver.
The Broncos’ Jason Chamberlain was the #6 Seeded 149 pounder. Jason wrestled like a man on fire gaining wins all of the way into the semi-finals. Making it into the semi-finals guarantees a place on the podium but Jason wasn’t satisfied with that alone. After losing the semi-final match up to Frank Molinaro (Penn State), Jason bounced back with two consecutive wins earning him a 3rd place finish.
At 157 lbs. Adam Hall came into the NCAA tournament as the #1 seeded wrestler. Adam wrestled well but ended up dropping his Quarter-Finals match 3-1 giving up a final second takedown to Jason Welch of Northwestern. The Bronco came back through the consolation bracket to end up taking 5th and avenging his loss with a victory over Welch. Adams only other loss came from Steve Fittery (American). Unfortunately Kirk Smith at 184 lbs. was unable to compete due to injury. The other wrestlers to compete in Philadelphia were Alan Bartelli (125), Levi Jones (141), Kurt Swartz (165), Jake Swartz (174), Matt Casperson (197), and J.T. Felix (265). Through their combined efforts the Broncos placed 9th as a team.
